Grail Diary Inserts

|
|
Note: the following are personal notes from research on the grail diary and intended for personal use only. This is a not for profit site with no commercial ties or even advertisements.
Images have been reduced to a max height of 250 pixels for all images other than screen shots taken from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. These images are in no way print quality and are felt to be presented in accordance with Fair Use guidelines. This is similar to what Google Images, Bing Images, Yahoo Images, Picsearch, Flicker, Photobucket and similar web services consider acceptable.
Many have spent a good amount of effort researching the Grail Diary, and for some this has been a life long pursuit. This web site in no way takes credit for any of this hard work.
Great effort has been made to list all potential sources of information in order to provide credit and reference sources for information. This page alone has over one thousand source links.
If you have any comments, correction, additions or concerns, please contact me.

There are a great many diary inserts used by replica makers to create a more personal or "complete" diary.
Several inserts are seen protruding form and within pages of the Grail Diary throughout the Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade movie and in the From Star Wars to Indiana Jones: The Best of the Lucasfilm Archives. Some of these inserts are invaluable in the quest of of the Grail, while others are simply bookmarks or sentimental items. And for and Grail Diary enthusiast, these inserts are of great importance.
There are also several inserts that we just get glimpses of. And whatever is on them would be of great interest to any Grail Diary nut.

The "Arabic Letter", is felt to be an original prop from "A Passage To India". It can be seen clearly on film and they have a copy in the LF Archives with the other diary inserts.

Blue LARY Train Ticket

This appears to be a bookmark for the Three Trials set. Some believe that this insert itself is one of two different Los Angeles Railyard Tickets. Others believe that another "version of this same ticket is actually the same ticket folded differently.
The first LARy ticket is shown on the famous 3 trials. The location of the second ticket isn't shown in the movie, but is probably in one of the first signatures in the diary. COW 40930
"The second blue lary ticket is probably on signature 12, page 6- 7. the path of the grail - sword and the scroll." edog399 COW 40930
One source states that they have different names on them "Los Angeles Railway Company" and "Pacific Electric Ry"
Also of note, diarists sometimes use a small "University Transfer" insert, which is an invented insert.

{Source: Zeppelin Scene Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade}

{Source: Smithsonian v. 21 (October 1990) Pages: 112-125}
Note that in the Smithsonian picture, the Diary appears to have two separate blue LARy tickets - one shown on the open page and other show protruding from an earlier page.
archive indygear smithsphoto.jpg photobucket smithsphoto-1-2.jpg
The tickets are 20cm long and 5cm wide.
The edited blue LARY ticket was used by Henry as a guide when reading the "Three Trials" page.
In regards to the unedited blue LARY ticket, one theory was that there was only meant to be one blue ticket in the book at any time, but after production was done, the second ticket was put in the book, as seen in a Smithsonian magazine picture from the old site.

This insert if found on the Omphalos page, which may be a copy of the 1899 Silver Certificate page. It has the addition of a light pencil sketch of the a land feature similar to the canyon on the "Map of No Names". There is also a half drawn Brotherhood Cross. It is folded twice?
The text on this page appear to be taken from The Grail: Quest for the Eternal (ISBN 0824500350) by John Matthews.
page 67: The Grail is flooded with spiritual light and shines out of those who seek it.
page 64: The true and proper home of the Grail is Paradise, the perfect realm of the spirit where the Priest King, John, the last guardian, reigns benignly from his castle within the Garden of Earthly Delights.
One of the words meanings attributed to the words Lapsit exillas, used by Wolfram Von Eschenbach to describe the Grail is the "stone of exile" (from Paradise) and by extension the "wish for paradise"
There is penciled in text which may be "Crescent mountain you would find"
The backside of this note contains the Map of No Names.
The Map With No Names was made in several different ways. The one folded up, known as the "Wolfram Scrap", was draw in in pencil with inked text. The others are
entirely in pencil.

There are three different types of maps in the original diary:
1) Foldout printed maps
-there are three of these, and are all obviously photocopied from some original source.
2) Hand-drawn area maps
There are three double-spread maps of this kind
3) Hand-drawn close-up maps
-these are the maps showing Henry's trails such as "The Wilderness of the Wanderings", which includes one double-spread map

War Time Sheet/Benjamin Franklin Quote

{Source: Library Scene Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade}
mediafire monztmvzwcv COW 35426 Pg2
Many Diary enthusiasts have confused this insert with the "George Washington" insert. But it appears that this may be an entirely different insert altogether.
The text is more or less the following (above Indy's thumb, I haven't taken the time to figure out the bottom part, but it talks in part about fossil remains):
In 1939 the marriage rate was 14.3 per 1000 of the population.
By 1943 the marriage rate had dropped down to 11.8 per 1000.
The increase between 1939 and 1942 were due to the psychological and
economic effects of the war.
If the current trend is continued to follow the history of similar
conditions of the first World War a further decrease from the 1943
marriage rate is to be expected.
A sharp upswing is predicted for the years im (line break) mediately
following the end of the war.
This is of course is not consistent with the movie's timeline
This appears to be used as a bookmark on the stained glass window page. In the movie, it is shown folded up with a few lines of text printed on it.
This insert is known as the "Benjamin Franklin quote", "BF quote" and the "War Time" insert

{Source: Believed to be insert created by Indy Magnoli; found at rac3d.com}
rac3d.com Washington Quote front.jpg Washington Quote rear.jpg
According to Holt of COW the Benjamin Franklin (BF) quote and the "War Time" quote inserts are the same. The insert shown above shows WAR TIME and the Franklin quote together. Despite the name of the image, this is not the Washington Quote.

{Source: mszynisz sites.google quotesheets}
There is a concern that these inserts contain World War II data, which does not fit into the timeline of the movie. Others feel that these are accurate prop reproductions and therefore more accurate than if you changed the data to reflect more time accurate data.

In From Star Wars to Indiana Jones: The Best of the Lucasfilm Archives photos, you can see four diamonds in a diamond pattern right before the following quote from George Washington as the insert protrudes out of the top of the Diary (upside down):
Show not yourself glad at the misfortune of another, though he were your enemy.
George Washington
This is from the 22nd of the 110 Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation that Washington copied out by hand at the age of 16. They are based on a set of rules composed by French Jesuits in 1595 and were potentially an exercise in penmanship assigned by his schoolmaster.

In some pictures in From Star Wars to Indiana Jones: The Best of the Lucasfilm Archives, you can see the words:
CROSS TIES
This appears to be the top of the same insert that has the George Washington quote.
It is not clear what this insert really is nor what significance it has on the Grail quest or Last Crusade storyline. There are multiple Grail Diary versions of this insert used by Grail Diarists.
One source states that it is single sided, folded in half and loose. COW 37876
August Insert

{Source: Believed to be insert created by Indy Magnoli; found at rac3d.com}

{Source: tomvdj imageshack}
Is it an August train ticket, or horoscope handout or newspaper clipping with the Washington Quote at the bottom?
This may be loose and moving around the diary. Indiana Holt has it on Signature 03 Page 09.
It is believed to be placed after the Two Kneeling Knights/Knight Rubbing spread (we can see it on the picture from the Lucasfilms Archives book). And there's only one spread like this in the entire diary (Sig 9 Pg 4/5). So it's placed somewhere after this page in the Hero Diary. COW 37876
rac3d.com August ticket_a.jpg August ticket_b.jpg
According to Holt of COW the BF quote is the "war time" quote and the GW quote is the August heading. The insert shown above shows August and the Washington quote together.

The version of the GW insert was used by many Grail Diarists early on. It has the Washington quote and the rest of the pages are filled with excerpts from The Declaration of Independence. More details on this insert are found on our Washington Quote Page.

In this scene, Indy keeps the scrap in his pocket, keeping the Diary out of the sight of Elsa. Then we see what appears to be the same insert inside the Diary. And half a minute later, we can see the scrap in his hands.
It is important to note that although it may not be possible to have the same prop in the diary as was in Dr. Jones' pocket in the movie per the storyline, it is entirely possible to have a second copy of this prop in the diary or even the same prop if the scenes were filmed at different times. It is believed that several "scraps" were made for the movie.

the scrap wasn't in the diary before Indy received it. It was given to him by Elsa in Venice, which was given to her by Henry Sr.
this sheet is the folded insert sheet Marcus takes out of the diary when he opens the map with no names spread.
In the Hero Diary, this is used as an insert (it goes into the map with no names

The 2 page centerfold Arabia Map found in signatures 3, 4, etc. is the one inside the green frame. It is not "photocopied" but appears hand-drawn, just like Dead Sea spread located in the middle of signature 2. Note also that the names of the cities, etc. are also hand-drawn. For example normally "ARABIA" text is not completely seen in this part of map, but because it is all hand-drawn, prop maker included the whole text.
The 2-page Arabia Map (insert) is the one inside the red frame. It looks like it's photocopied from the simpler version of this map (check Magnoli's page - there is a small picture of all 4 insert maps).

Invented Gray Letters:
March 12th, 1908
My Dearest Henry,
We miss you terribly. I hope the search is going well. Henry and I can’t wait to meet up with you in Venice. He said he would like to go for a boat ride while there but I told him we may not have time. By the way your son would like to be called Indiana now. He says since you are named Henry he should have a different name so of course he named himself after the dog. He is running around with the dog and calling himself Indiana Jones. I’m sure he will outgrow it very soon. It does make it easier to call the two of them in for dinner. I only have to call one name.
Little Henry, sorry...Indiana found a very interesting map that he thinks you will want for your diary showing Egypt and the Sinai. He loves doing research for you.
Did you get the journal for Him? Perhaps once he has his own he won’t play with yours so much.
We love you
Anna

Supposedly, early 1930's cigarette packs have a silver (appearing blue in photos) bottom and the mid/later 1930's have a brown bottom.
Pack: 8.2 cm x 15.6 cm
Seal: 2.4 cm x 4.5 cm
Later WWII versions (shown above with brown wrapper) don't have any silver foil under the Camel wrap and instead has the wartime economy paper.
To be "screen accurate" the pack needs to be opened up and spread out and free of any barcodes, duty free stamps or metal foil COW 42515

The gold LARY ticket was pasted onto one of the repeating text pages, "The Grail is flooded with spiritual life" text page (the same that the 1899 Silver Certificate is pasted to). The other page may be the Stone Vessel page. The gold ticket is placed in one of the last end signatures - but this may be different than where it was placed in the movie. COW 40930

Rubbing - 41 x 58 cm
The Grail Tablet Rubbing is made from thin paper and contains two rubbings. The bottom right half is a rubbing from the "original" tablet, while the central rubbing appears to have been done by Harrison Ford during shooting from the knight's shield.
The Grail Tablet is a combination of original Latin Psalms, retranslated scripture, and invented passages. The prop masters took the English psalm and retranslated it into Latin word by word.

According to the Lucasfilm Archives the rubbing measures 41cm x 58cm. This is about 16" x 23". When folded it will stick out of your diary a bit 28lb off-white/ivory colored paper
The Grail Tablet is an interesting prop in that it is a combination of original Latin Psalms, retranslated scripture, and invented passages:
...Knights of the First Crusade, while besieging the city of Alexandretta + Lord... God, Almighty and Eternal... we owe love always and wheresoever... to give thanks to Thee through Jesus, Thou, O God... Through Christ Our Lord, Jesus Christ... Almighty God and... Eternal... loving who you gave to the Knights of the First Crusade... while besieging the city of Christ, Alexandretta, we owe + water... always and everywhere there... to give thanks through Jesus... Our Lord... who drinks the water... I shall give him, will have a spring inside him welling up eternal life... O Lord, King of our severe gods... blessed are they who dwell in thy temple, O Lord... they praise you for all time... You, God, are my refuge : Send forth Thy light and Thy truth + These shall be my guide : They shall lead me to Thy holy mountain in the place where you dwell : through the canyon of the crescent (waxing) moon : narrow enough only for one man... to the temple of the sun, holy enough for all men... + where the Grail that holds the blood of Our Jesus Christ dwells forever... God, holy enough for all men...

The color of the print paper looks to be 'of white'. It is lightly aged. (Per IndianaHolt)
"white" paper is a relatively recent innovation. Most paper throughout the 20th century was heavy wood pulp paper and it was naturally a brownish/yellowish color even when new. White paper was linen paper and far to expensive to be used for a disposable document like a telegram!
''Rockwell condensed' font was used by some replicators (edog399)

Regarding the potential right seal on some telegram repos:
According to Telegram Experts:
Regarding the names DELHI - RANGOON etc. For a telegram to have been sent over this route it would have been sent via the Indian State Telegraph System (ISTS), who had a monopoly on all internal telegraphic services and at that time telegraphs in Burma were operated by the ISTS. To have gone by cable it would have been sent overland from Delhi to Rangoon via ISTS. From Rangoon to Penang then to Singapore and on to China. So the most direct route would be DELHI - MADRAS - PENANG - SINGAPORE - CHINA.
Regarding the seal, This is the EASTERN TELEGRAPH COMPANY SEAL and not the EASTERN EXTENSION. So I think it's fair to say that this is not a real telegram.
Just to make it clear. This is not a real telegram form. The normal wording from a ETC telegram, does not specify individual routes.
According to Grail Diary Indiana Holt:
there is no extra circle in the right corner of the [prop] telegram
the side bar line has to be lined up with line in the ''CIRCUIT'' box. COW 18191 Pg4
